My Journey into the Heart of the Amazon: A Spiritual Awakening

Discovering the Amazon River

In 2003, I organized my first guided river trip on the Amazon River. It was a thrilling experience that changed my life. After apprenticing with a master Maine guide, I learned the ropes on the Allagash River and Saint John River. The beauty of nature inspired me to explore the Amazon. I visited many areas of the Peruvian Amazon, meeting various jungle guides along the way.

The Maine guide I apprenticed with belonged to a lineage of the Micmac Native Americans. This connection drew me to places rich in Native American culture. I studied at the Earthways School of Wilderness Living, where I participated in river guiding trips, philosophy, and shamanism. When I arrived in the Amazon, I sought a guide who could take us deep into the heart of Shipibo territory on the Ucayali River in his homemade riverboat.

A Journey into Shipibo Territory

Our expedition was magical. We slept under a vast mosquito net, open to the moon and stars, on the beaches of the Ucayali. It was September, and the beaches were expansive, but the river was rising. The pink river dolphins seemed to sense the change. They leaped joyfully out of the water, coming close to our beach where our mosquito net was set up.

During our journey, we cooked our own ayahuasca from plants we harvested along the way. One night, we held a ceremony beneath the full moon on the beautiful beach of the Ucayali River. The mosquito net was our sanctuary, open to the celestial wonders above. Throughout the ceremony, the pink river dolphins played nearby, beaching themselves on the sand and then splashing back into the water. It felt as if they were trying to communicate with us.

The Ceremony of Connection

As the ceremony unfolded, I entered a profound space where the moon became the center of my heart. The dolphins began to swim across this moon within me, and I could feel their presence physically. They spoke to me through emotions, sharing deep wisdom. In the morning, it seemed others had also heard the dolphins’ messages. We all felt the connection.

Later, while chatting with our guide and other visitors, I shared my dream of purchasing land in Maine. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford it. Then, our guide mentioned a piece of land for sale near his house on Yarina Cocha Lake. This sparked something in me. After our retreat at Kapitari, we returned to Iquitos, and I was determined to pursue this vision of buying land in the Amazon.

A New Vision Takes Shape

A friend joined me for a while, and later, with four of us—three from Maine and my Shipibo girlfriend, who would soon become the mother of my children—we brainstormed a name for our vision. We wanted something that reflected our connection to the earth. That’s when we came up with "Tierravida," which means "Earth Life."

The name was inspired by the organic farming movement in Maine, the abundance of the land along the banks of Yarina Cocha Lake, and, of course, the enchanting Amazonian pink river dolphin. This journey has been about more than just exploring the Amazon; it has been about fostering deep healing experiences and supporting local indigenous communities.

Embracing the Amazonian Spirit

The Amazon is alive with energy. Each moment spent there is a reminder of the interconnectedness of life. The lush greenery, the vibrant wildlife, and the flowing rivers all tell a story of resilience and unity. I’ve learned that true healing comes from understanding our place within this vast web of existence.

As I continue my journey, I am committed to preserving the rainforest and supporting the local communities. Through our associated NGO, Ni Bero, we strive to create sustainable practices that honor the land and its people. It’s about giving back and ensuring that future generations can experience the magic of the Amazon.
